Letters and Stamps

It’s Friday evening so that must mean I’m home cleaning my room. Honestly, you wouldn’t think one person would make so many messes throughout the week to warrant a serious weekly cleaning. Maybe if I’d get rid of some junk and put things away when I’m done with them…

Today I found a box inside a box that was full of letters. The oldest one I found goes back to 2003. I filed them all into another box where I save such things in categorized hanging folders. I’m not sure what the point is of keeping these things because I doubt I’ll ever feel the need to read any of them in full again, but somehow I can’t find the harm in tossing them or the advantage in throwing them away. One of the most peculiar notes is from an author I don’t recognize, and if I remember correctly, didn’t recognize when I received it. It’s from someone in Australia who writes (in metallic purple ink):

Daer John,

Even though we haven’t really had the opportunity to really get to know each other, you are a Zwan fan & that counts for a whole lot!!

Though from what I have read you seem to me to be a really cool guy.

I hope that we can become good friends & share even better [tunes?].

I wish you well in everything that you choose to undertake & the best of luck in your dreams.

Very curious.  I wonder if I ever fashioned a reply.  There are also postcards from the grand canyon, greeting cards sent on behalf of cats, paper doll robots, and blank Keno play slips.

In the bottom of another box I found seven sealed sheets of Star Wars stamps and two sealed sheets of Forever stamps.  I think I planned to save a couple Star Wars sheets for a day when they would be collectible, but I think I’d much rather use them slowly over time adding additional postage as necessary.  Incidentally, I found a 37¢ stamp on a SASE (that I sent to a penpal) that said “Music” on it and was part of stamp commemorating motion pictures.  I wish I’d kept some sheets of those and the architecture stamps to use slowly over time.  The next time the USPS issues some really great stamps, I’ll have to be sure to stock up.

One Response to “Letters and Stamps”

  1. What a sweet note. I have the same problem trying to figure out what to do with old letters. For now they’re all in a big typing-paper box on a shelf in a closet, but the box is almost full, so I may have to make a decision soon.

Right now they have Simpsons stamps! I wish they’d included more characters, though I suppose that would have been a tough selection process.
