District of Columbia v. Heller

A lot of people are upset over this ruling, but I’m not one of them. I shouldn’t be surprised because truth be known in my youth I was quite an advocate of gun control. I thought that maybe if we never made another gun and every time one was found it was melted down that eventually there would be no guns and hence no violence. Of course I was thirteen and fairly naïve at the time.

Since then I have slowly come around and there are several firearms in our household. I understand why guns make people uncomfortable. There’s a lot of power in a little bit of black powder. What I don’t understand is why people continue to believe that gun bans make them safer. The District of Columbia and Chicago, IL have some of the highest homicide rates nationwide and yet have the strictest gun control. Do people think that if a blanket ban on handguns is lifted that people will say to themselves, “Well, now I can legally obtain a handgun so that I can go commit crimes.” If people are going to commit violent crimes, do you think they are going to bother to recognize gun laws?

We could ban all firearms and abolish them completely, but a person who has set their mind on committing a violent crime is going to do it regardless of the tool. Furthermore, the only way you’re going to get rid of firearms of any kind is you control all machining equipment which would be pretty impossible short of the government having Orwellian control over everything.

I’ve been debating this with a few people online and it just boggles my mind that people think lifting bans will mean more crime and see no correlation between the fact that the states and municipalities with the strictest gun control laws also have the highest violent crime rates.

I could go on, but I’m not going to change any minds…probably.

Feel free to share your questions, comments, or concerns about this ruling with me. I’m pretty good about being diplomatic about these things.
